Applying for an elective

The elective is your chance to practice medicine anywhere in the world for 2 months during the clinical section of your course. While many students go abroad for this section of the course, remember you can opt to stay in this country too.

Things to consider when looking for an elective abroad:

  1. What’s the weather like?
  2. What state is the healthcare system in?
  3. Is there a high level of crime?
  4. What visas or permits do I need?
  5. Do I need to renew my passport?
  6. How easy is it to get a job?
  7. Do they need me?
  8. What immigration issues might I come up against?
  9. Will I need to be proficient with the language?
  10. How far in advance do I need to apply?
  11. What is in store for me work-wise?
  12. Do I need vaccinations?
  13. Will my supervisor be suitably qualified?
  14. Might I need to sort out a job to come back to?

Course supervisors should be able to help you with more information.

Student Clare Aitchison spent her elective in the Southern Hebrides. Read about her experience here.
