GP Training Path

In order to practice as a GP within the UK, a doctor must be:

  • Registered with the General Medical Council and listed on their GP register
  • Certified by the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB).

The CCT, or Certificate of Completion of Training, is the ultimate goal of a GP trainee. This certificate, issued by PMETB is the qualifying ‘piece of paper’ which certifies a GP as fully trained. Once this certificate is issued the PMETB will advise the General Medical Council and the practitioner concerned will be listed on the GP register.
