Specialty Training for General Practice

From August 2007 the College is involved in a number of key aspects of GP training.

GP Curriculum

The College has created the first national curriculum for training in general practice which all trainees will follow from August 2007.

Set within a framework for a structured educational programme, the curriculum is designed to address the wide-ranging knowledge, competencies, clinical and professional attitudes considered appropriate for a doctor intending to undertake practice in the contemporary UK National Health Service.

Monitoring your Training (Certification)

The College is responsible for signing off your training and recommending to PMETB that you have completed sufficient training.

If you are applying for a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (under Article 10 of the PMETB Order), the College’s Certification Unit will evaluate your general practice training and make a final recommendation at the end of your training to the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) who issue your certificate.

Assessment to Practice (nMRCGP)

The nMRCGP is the final assessment to show that a doctor has satisfactorily completed specialty training for general practice and is safe and proficient to enter independent general practice in the UK.

The nMRCGP assessment will be the single training and assessment system for UK trained doctors wishing to practice as a GP.
