How to apply for GP training
Speciality training for general practice is based on a three
year programme. Programmes are organised through the postgraduate
deneries which are organised geographically across the UK.
From August 2007, these programmes will be based on the RCGP
Training Curriculum which has been approved by the Postgraduate
Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB).
It is RCGP policy that doctors wishing to train for general
practice should undertake the three-year run-through specialty
training programme.
Applicants who wish to apply for entry to a 3 year GP training
programme will need to apply through the National Recruitment Office for
GP Training.
Selection into GP training is now based on person specifications
and to apply for ST1 entry you will need to demonstrate eligibility
against the ST1 person
specification.
If you have undertaken training, it is possible that your
previous experience may have provided you with some of the
competences described in the GP curriculum, and you therefore maybe
eligible to shorten your training programme.
Applicants who wish to apply for entry to shortened training
will, as part of the application process, need to demonstrate that
they have attained the necessary competences. You should read the
relevant person specifications to determine the
appropriate entry level for you.
You should be aware that it is very likely that there
will be few, if any, ST2 or ST3 GP training programmes available
from August 2008. Vacancy details will be published on
