Certification Home
The RCGP's certification unit evaluates
general practice training on behalf of the General Medical Council
(GMC).
In addition to evaluating training
programmes the unit can give informal advice and information about
general practice training to those already on a GP training
programme as well as to doctors who are considering undertaking
training for general practice.
The GMC registers doctors to
practise medicine in the UK and is responsible for certifying
doctors for entry onto the GMC GP Register.
There are two routes to inclusion
on the GP register:
Certificate of Completion of Training
(CCT)
This is awarded to doctors who have
completed a full GMC GP approved training programme.
Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration
(CEGPR)
This is awarded to doctors who have
not followed the standard CCT route and would like to include
training undertaken overseas or non approved GP training posts.

ARE YOU COMPLETING YOUR GP TRAINING PROGRAMME
IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS ?
General Practice CCT
Applicants
If you are a GP trainee expecting
to complete your programme of training in the next 6 months, you
should act as soon as possible to ensure that you are entered onto
the GP Register, in order that you may take up an offer of
employment.
- Make sure that you are registered with the RCGP - either online
as an AiT if you are completing nMRCGP, or by submitting a
Registration Form for a CCT (available on our website) if you are
completing Summative Assessment.
- If your training includes any posts that commenced before
August 2007 please ensure that you send any relevant VTR forms to
the RCGP Certification Unit . These should be completed correctly
and endorsed by the relevant deanery. Please check that your forms
have been completed correctly by looking at our CCT Application
Checklist
. If your training includes posts from before August 2007
and you do not send the VTR forms to us for this period of
training, we will be unable to process your application and
recommendation for a CCT.
- If you are taking nMRCGP and have an ePortfolio, please ensure
that once you have accepted your final ARCP form through your
ePortfolio that you click the 'apply for a CCT' button once, this
will send your application for a CCT to the RCGP Certification
Unit.
- All GP trainees who are applying for a CCT will also need to
apply to the GMC. The GMC will invite you to apply to them via
'GMC Online' when you are nearing the end of your training.
Please see the GMC website for details of their fees.
- Once a complete and fully documented application has been
received, the Certification Unit will take upto 15 working
days to process your CCT application and forward a
recommendation to the GMC.
- The GMC will take up to 10 working days to issue your
CCT.
- For further information on the steps you need to take, please
visit
'GMC Online'.
CEGPR (formerly
Article 11) Applicants

applying for a Certificate of Eligibility for General Practice
Registration (CEGPR) you must send your application form and
supporting evidence directly to the GMC as soon as
possible. The GMC does not accept ARCP forms electronically,
these must be printed off (together with any evidence from your
ePortfolio that you wish to submit with your application) and
validated. ARCP forms must be stamped by the Deanery and ePortfolio
material validated as described in the CEGPR Guidance.
