The RCGP is rolling out a programme that will be delivered through a series of half day workshops throughout Great Britain.

The purpose of the training is to:

  • increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of GPs in dealing with clinical issues relating to work and health

  • ensure GPs are aware of their responsibilities in this area and to signpost additional means of support which will enable them and their teams to be confident that they are providing the best possible care for these patients.

Why the need for this training?

  • To signpost additional means of support which will enable GP’s and their teams to be confident that they are providing the best possible care for the patients.

  • To enable GPs to manage the patient with work / health issues up to a certain level as they do with conditions in the area of other specialities. The workshops will be delivered by an RCGP-trained GP and Occupational Physician. It is envisaged that around  40 workshops will be delivered over a one year period, each attended by 35 GPs.

  • Many patients require active support to be able to return to work or to continue working with a medical condition and, for the majority, GPs are the trusted first point of contact and guidance for those with such health problems. Doctors have a duty of care to act in the best interests of their patient and there is evidence that GPs find sickness absence management particularly challenging and may be unsure of what they and the general public team should do. This can be a source of conflict in the consultation.

Did you know…?

“Recent evidence suggests that work can be good for health, reversing the harmful effects of long-term unemployment and prolonged sickness absence.  Yet much of the current approach to the treatment of people of working age, including the sickness certification process, reflects and assumption that illness is incompatible with being in work”  (Dame Carol Black 2008)

"Most people with common health problems can be helped to return to work by following a few basic principles of healthcare and workplace management.  This can be done with existing or minimal additional resources, and is low cost or cost-neutral.  Policy should be directed to persuading and supporting health professionals and employers to implement these principles.” (VR Review 2008)
