Educational objectives are to enable participants to:

  • differentiate between allergic and non-allergic disease and to identify the offending allergens
  • better manage patients in primary care
  • better understand how allergic rhinitis impacts on patients and how to optimise self management
  • identify patients who could benefit from allergen desensitisation.

This update, held in Mental Health Week, was introduced and chaired by Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham, RCGP Clinical Champion for Mental Health, exploring the essential role of the GP in primary care mental health, followed by discussion and Q&A.

 

Educational objectives were to enable participants to:

  • be aware of the importance of Early Intervention (EI) in young people with developing psychosis and to review the evidence for EI initiatives
  • encourage practitioners to return to their practices and develop link with their EI team
  • understand the revised NICE guidelines and how implementation can be facilitated with local services
  • take ideas for audit of depression care back to their practice
  • promote reflection on current thinking about depression as a biomedical illness
  • consider different approaches to patients with distress within the consultation.

Anaphylaxis: the essential update

This update, presented by Professor Aziz Sheikh, RCGP Clinical Champion for Allergy, explored the essential role of the GP in the management of anaphylaxis, followed by discussion and Q&A.

 

Educational objectives were to enable participants to:

  • recognise the clinical features of anaphylaxis
  • effectively manage anaphylactic emergencies
  • gain hands-on experience safely and effectively with using adrenaline auto-injectors
  • ensure that the long-term needs of patients with anaphylaxis are being met so as to minimise the risk of recurrent reactions and maximise the chances of favourable outcomes if a further reaction occurs.

 

Participants were encouraged to bring clinical cases that they wish to discuss.

Dementia care: promoting excellence in practice

This update, presented by Professor Louise Robinson, RCGP Clinical Champion for Ageing and Older People's Health and Wellbeing, explored the essential role of the GP in key areas of dementia care including detection and diagnosis followed by discussion and Q&A.

 

Educational objectives included to enable participants to:

  • know how dementia presents in primary care consultations
  • demonstrate cognitive assessment tools for use in primary care
  • know what non-drug and drug options are available to manage behavioural problems in people with dementia
  • understand how research has influenced dementia care in the UK in terms of prevention and cure.

  • Professor Ian McKeith, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist and Clinical Director, Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle University.

This update, presented by Dr Graham Davenport, RCGP Clinical Champion for Osteoporosis (Musculoskeletal Medicine), explored the essential role of the GP in the primary and secondary prevention of osteoporotic fragility fractures in primary care, followed by discussion and Q&A.

 

Educational objectives were to enable participants:

  • to identify the ‘at risk’ groups for fragility fractures
  • to manage these patients in primary care
  • an opportunity to discuss the practical implementation of NICE guidance and the FRAX assessment tool
  • an opportunity to discuss the issues around medication compliance.

How to manage headaches in general practice

RCGP Clinical Champion for Headache

 

Despite a high impact on the lives of sufferrers, the needs of headache patients go largely unmet. The majority do not receive a diagnosis and when they do tretment is less than ideal. This update by Dr Kernick focussed on ways to manage headaches in general practice.

 

Educational objectives:

  • Headache is not easy to manage within the constraints of a ten minute consultation. What is it, how can I treat it, does it represent an underlying pathology? The objective of the evening was to clarify this area and enable GPs to be more confident in the management of this common problem.

  • To learn about a system of patient-centred management in COPD

The RCGP presented an informal open discussion with the RCGP Clincial Champion for End of Life Care, Professor Keri Thomas and guests to discuss the recently launched RCGP End of Life Care Strategy and the challenges faced by primary care teams. This was a chance to suggest practical ways in which the RCGP could help GPs improve end of life care for patients.
