History of General Practice in Wales

We have decided to establish a database of artefacts and manuscripts to throw some light on the history of general practice across Wales.

The political leadership which founded the NHS came from within the Principality and Welsh general practitioners have made many notable contributions to the discipline at local, national and international levels.

The history of general practice in the 19th and 20th Centuries is important for future generations to document and understand.

Its ancient history has been well-documented by Cule and others up to the foundation of the NHS in the 1940s but this has not necessarily been the case since its inception.

Many general practices in Wales do keep historic artefacts such as certificates, patient's letters, diagnostic and surgical instruments, on display showing their pride in their communities.

Unfortunately, many other historical items have become lost or destroyed over time but we want to prevent this from happening and create a virtual collection of items to reflect the rich history of general practice in Wales.

We want to place a historical value on each item by recording its brief history, its owner and where it can be seen then storing this information in our archive.

We are always interested to find out about artefacts and other historical items in your possession and are looking for material prior to 1985.

If you have any archive material which you think might be of interest, would like to register an item on our database or want to find out more about this historical project please contact our Project Administrator Karen Morris on 029 20 504 603 or via email at kmorris@rcgp.org.uk
