National General Practice Week: Celebrating the best of NHS General Practice

 

National General Practice Week: Celebrating the Best of the NHS General Practice organised by the BMA’s Scottish General Practitioners Committee (SGPC) in partnership with RCGP Scotland was held 8th - 14th February 2010. 

 

The week aimed to raise awareness of the range of services provided locally to patients by GPs and the wider primary healthcare team, and also encouraged politicians to value NHS General Practice.

 

A  series of events were held to promote this week including an exhibition and reception in the Scottish Parliament, a members debate in the Parliament Chamber and the launch of the BMA’s policy document “General Practice in Scotland: The Way Ahead”,

 

RCGP Scotland have also produced a booklet containing patient testimonials recieved as nominations for GP of the Year 2009.

 

 

General Practice in Scotland: The Way Ahead - Final Report

BMA Scotland have published a final policy document on the way ahead for general practice in Scotland. This document has been developed following consultation with patients, the profession, NHS and other stakeholder organisations involved in health. It will address issues relating to:

  • Access to general practice
  • Out of hours care
  • Health inequalities
  • Shifting the balance of care
  • General practice workforce
  • Infrastructure

Scottish Parliament Exhibition 8th-12th February

 

Wednesday 10th February - Parliamentary Reception (by invite only)

A reception at the Scottish Parliament, hosted by Dr Richard Simpson MSP. The reception featured a keynote speech by Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. Guests included MSPs, healthcare professionals working in General Practice, patients and other community representatives from across Scotland.  This event was designed to provide GPs and service users with the opportunity to meet and engage with MSPs from throughout Scotland.

 

Thursday 11 February: Debate in the Scottish Parliament

To coincide with GP Week the following motion was debated in the Scottish Parliament:

 

Dr Richard Simpson: Celebrating Scotland’s First Ever General Practice Week in Scotland—That the Parliament notes that more than 21 million patient consultations take place in general practice in Scotland every year; is proud of the high quality service provided by GPs and their practice teams every day, and welcomes the first ever General Practice Week in Scotland, from 8 to 12 February 2010, hosted by the British Medical Association Scotland in partnership with the Royal College of General Practitioners Scotland, which aims to celebrate the very best of NHS general practice in Scotland.
