South East Scotland Faculty

Mentoring Scheme

In June 2006 the faculty launched their Mentoring Scheme in an attempt to offer an appropriate, adaptable peer support scheme for GPs in our area.  We recognise that there comes a time in many people's working lives when they might feel the benefit of a little support, a different viewpoint, some impartial advice or even just a listening and understanding ear.  We have designed this new scheme to try and provide just this.

Who is the Mentor Scheme for?

Though designed to offer peer support for GP's starting out in their career the scheme is on offer to any GP at any stage of their career who feel that they would benefit from additional support of a Mentor.

What is a Mentor?

Essentially we want your Mentor to be a source of support and advice either short term to help with a particular situation or issue or longer term.  We are identifying a pool of "regular volunteers" who are established in General Practice and would be willing to act as Mentors.  If you have a particular interest or request for a pairing we would be more than happy to try and accommodate this.

What is required?

Our Mentor's skills and experience as a GP in South East Scotland are vital to the success of the scheme.  Mentors need the time and ability to act as a point of contact and as a potential source of advice etc - it sometimes is a tremendous source of support to have a local ear to discuss unfamiliar or new issues.

Arrangements are INFORMAL - there is no demand for regular meetings with your Mentor - all we ask is that they are available to you should you need them.  There is no onerous commitment to meetings or reviews, nor should you expect your Mentor to be on hand night and day.

How does the scheme work?

You are required to complete a brief request form giving some very basic information, your contact details, date of qualification, status. A little bit about your practice and an indication of the type of Mentor you need.  We will take this information and identify the best Mentor for you.  We will then write to you inviting you to get in touch with them and vice versa.

What about confidentiality?

We will not store any details about you other than your contact details and the name of your Mentor.  All information is strictly confidential at all times and, other than giving your contact details to your new Mentor, no information will be passed to anyone except the Faculty Administrator who is responsible for the scheme.

How do I get involved?

If you would like to request a Mentor please complete the Mentor request form at the bottom of this page.  If you would like to volunteer as a Mentor then please complete the Mentor form.  Alternatively you can contact the faculty office to discuss this further.
