RCGP NI CHAIN OF OFFICE
RE-DESIGNED
When the Northern Ireland Faculty was established back in the 1950s
an official chain of office for the Faculty Provost was designed
and developed. This was worn by the incumbent Provost at official
functions. Each year, each newly appointed Provost had their name
inscribed on a gold bar and inserted on the chain of office. In
2002, when NI Faculty was uplifted to become a country Council, the
position of Provost became obsolete – only Faculties have Provosts.
NI Council was loath to lose this important position and considered
establishing NI Faculty in addition to a NI Council, however in a
country as small as Northern Ireland this would not be a prudent
use of members’ subscriptions. The NI Provost’s chain remained in
safe keeping for a number of years until a suitable option could be
developed.
In
June 2009, NI Council considered a proposal from Council chairman,
Dr David Johnston, to develop the chain into a joint NI
Provost/Chairman Chain so that it would be on display again. This
was considered to be the most cost effective solution. Therefore
the new RCGPNI Provost and Chairman’s Chain is now live again and
being “aired” on all important public occasions.
