Annual Research Grant
The Severn Faculty of the Royal College of General
Practitioners is pleased to be able to offer up to four research
grants per year, each of up to £500. The Faculty Board wishes
to encourage submissions from any member of the Primary Health Care
Team in the Faculty including GPs and Registrars.
Applicants should note that
applications
are welcome throughout the year; usually a decision will be made
within eight weeks. Successful applicants will be expected to
write a formal report on their work which may subsequently be
edited and published in the Faculty Newsletter.
6th Formers Work Experience - Database and Guide - Available
now!
The Severn Faculty has produced a guide for GP Surgeries
who may be interested in offering work experience to sixth formers
but are not sure how best to manage the student. This
portfolio of ideas and information has been put together
by GPs in surgeries currently offering work experience
throughout the Severn Faculty area and covers aspects such as
confidentiality, guidelines, mock interviews and gives examples of
how other surgeries deliver work experience to their
students. There is also additional information available for
schools in regard to university requirements and the UCAS
process.
If you are a GP Surgery interested in offering students an
insight into general practice then please
contact the Severn Faculty who
are compiling a central database of surgeries willing to offer
students work experience.
Primarily
the guide is available to download but hard copies can be
obtained from the Faculty Office.
The Severn Mentoring Network
There is evidence that newly qualified GPs (NQGPs) may need
mentor support for the two years after completion of vocational
training. During this time they may experience instability
and isolation socially, professionally and educationally and mentor
support can help them negotiate the transition to independent
professional life more smoothly. The Severn mentoring network
is a new initiative developed by some local GPs and jointly funded
by the Severn School of Primary Care, the PCTs and Severn Faculty
of the RCGP with support from the local GP Education Trusts.
It aims to provide confidential mentoring support to newly
qualified GPs in Severn and will be launched in the next few
months.
Who is the scheme for?
The scheme will be open to GPs within the first two years
following qualification. It will be open to anyone beginning
work in Severn, regardless of where they trained, although in the
first year we will be piloting the scheme in Gloucestershire, Bath
and Swindon.
Who are the mentors?
The mentors are all practising GPs who live or work in
Severn. They will have to undertake training for their role
and will have access to supervision as required.
What can newly qualified GPs expect of their
mentors?
The idea of the mentoring network is to provide a confidential
learning relationship between two individuals, where the NQGP will
have the time and space to reflect upon their career. We
would anticipate that the relationship will last between 1 and 2
years, depending upon particular circumstances. Experience of
schemes elswehere in the country suggests that NQGPs will probably
be in contact with their mentors every 6-8 weeks although obviously
this varies between individuals. It is not anticipated that
mentors would be expected to provide more frequent contact or
support.
Do I have to pay for the scheme?
The mentoring scheme is free of charge to NQGPs as the mentors
receive a centrally funded honorarium. However NQGPs will be
required to become a member of a local GP Education Trust.
How will the scheme be publicised?
Information about the scheme will be sent out with all new
applications to join the Performers Lists, as well as via the local
GP training schemes and the appraisal network.
