Introduction by the Minister for Health and Social Services, Edwina Hart AM MBE

The Welsh Health Survey estimates that approximately 1 in 4 adults have a disability.  However evidence shows that disabled patients can encounter serious difficulties in accessing services in the Primary Care setting.

This innovative training programme results from partnership between organisations including the Welsh Assembly Government, and I am very pleased that we provided funding to support its development.  I believe the training will provide practitioners, managers and staff with a valuable insight into the problems that disabled patients regularly experience when accessing Primary Care services.  Understanding the difficulties encountered by patients with disabilities will enhance your ability to assess and develop the services you offer and encourage equal access to Primary Care for all patients.

I strongly believe that equality in General Medical Services is an important goal that we should all be striving to achieve.  I am committed to improving services for people with disability and this training project links strongly to the work we have done and continue to do.

I commend this training course to you, and am convinced it will make a real contribution to our shared goal of first class patient care.
