Press Statement: RCGP calls for Prime Minister to withdraw
Health Bill
6 February 2012
On 3 February the College announced
its decision to call for complete withdrawal of the Health and
Social Care Bill in the wake of the amendments to the laid down in
the House of Lords on 1 February. Despite the number and extent of
the amendments, the College remains concerned that the Bill will
cause irreparable damage to patient care and jeopardise the NHS in
England.
While GPs in Scotland will be
unaffected by this change because of the different funding
structure of NHS services in Scotland, RCGP Scotland supports
the College’s request for withdrawal of the bill. RCGP Scotland
Chair, Dr John Gillies, said: “We fully support our colleagues in
requesting the withdrawal of a Bill that does not have the support
of the RCGP membership and that has the potential to have a
detrimental effect on standards in patient care in England”.
