About Us

The RCGP is a membership organisation which represents over 37,000 members (4,200 of whom are based in Scotland). In addition to a base in Edinburgh, the College in Scotland is represented through five regional faculty offices in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee and Glasgow.

The College in Scotland came into existence in 1953 (one year after the UK College), when a Scottish Council was created to take forward the College’s interests within the Scottish Health Service. After a number of years of increased activity and political devolution in Scotland, the College bought premises in 25 Queen Street, Edinburgh, in 1999 to house its expanding Scottish operation.

The College is governed by a UK Council of Trustees on behalf of its members. The College in Scotland is led by Scottish Council comprising twenty five members (including faculty representatives and elected officers) to develop ideas and initiatives in relation to general practice and primary care in Scotland.
