Professor Scott Brown took to the podium to
welcome guests and spoke about a time of change in the health care
system. The delivery of quality patient care was evidenced in the
evening’s proceedings. The first award of the night was
an acknowledgment to Mrs Angela Tysall
on behalf of the North West Doctors On Call for achieving their
Out of Hours
Accreditation.
The Caring for Carers
Award is designed to recognise the excellent work of
GP practices in Northern Ireland in identifying and supporting
carers. This award was presented to Dr Josephine
Mercer and the Kilkeel Primary Care Centre for providing
excellent facilities to enable the efficient delivery of
appropriate services to their patients. The practice recognised the
needs of both the carer and of those receiving care and ensured
that comprehensive care plans and packages are administered where
necessary.

The evening also saw the presentation of the
Practice Administration Team of the Year
Award (sponsored by Glaxosmithkline), which
recognises the hard work done by the practice team behind the
scenes, who provide the back bone of the GP surgery. The winner in
this category was the Devenish Practice in Enniskillen
followed by 1st runner up, Templepatrick Surgery,
Templepatrick and 2nd runner up, Kerrsland
Surgery on the Newtownards RD in Belfast. There is much
competition surrounding this award and the three finalists were
very deserving indeed.
The Practice Manager of the Year
Award 2011 (Sponsored by Bridge Accountancy) is
designed to recognise the work of practice managers in keeping
their practices running smoothly. To be nominated for this award
was in itself a marvelous achievement. This year, with an
overwhelming response and an extremely high standard of nominations
the accolade of Practice Manager of the Year 2011, went to Mrs
Susan Gallagher from the Dalriada Practice in
Ballycastle. The 1st runner up was Mrs Jackie Owens from Devenish
Practice in Enniskillen and 2nd runner up was Mrs Anne Frances
Byers from the Cuan Clinic in Portaferry. Three very worthy winners
who were each recognised for their hard work and dedication.

The General
Practitioner of the year Award was the highlight of
the evening. The award allows patients to nominate their GP
for outstanding care over and above the normal expectations. The
RCGP value this award as there are so many avenues allowing
patients to complain, yet so little opportunity is given to allow
the recognition of excellent care. The RCGP Northern Ireland
promotes quality in patient care and is proud to say that this
award has grown each year with the numbers of patients nominating
their GPs increasing. This in itself can only be a good sign for
primary care in Northern Ireland. The Winner of this award was
Dr. Julie-Anne McKergan who said she was, “Very shocked
and overjoyed to win the award. Since winning, the reaction of
patients, friends and family has been overwhelming. It means so
much to me to see how pleased patients are that I won. I greatly
appreciate all the lovely comments I have received and endeavour to
continue to try and provide the best care for patients that I
possibly can.’ Dr. McKergan’s nominating patient said of her,
“I will never be able to thank her enough and I will forever be
grateful to her.”

The other GP finalists on the evening included
Dr Heather Watson from Bayview Medical Practice in Derry, who
was 1st runner up and Dr Nigel Hart from Silverbirch Medical
in Bangor who was 2nd runner up.
Dr Clare Gerada, Chair of RCGP, closed
the evening by saying that it was clear that there were many good
things happening in general practice in Northern Ireland and
congratulated all the winners on their successes
Overall, the evening was a resounding success,
enjoyed by all and RCGP Northern Ireland would like to once again
congratulate all the winners and runners up!
