Faculties
The Royal College of General Practitioners is
unique amongst Royal Colleges in having a federal structure which
enhances communication with members at a local level.
There are currently 31 local College branches (known as
faculties) in the UK, one in the Republic of Ireland and one
Faculty for overseas members. On joining the College, every Member
and Associate is automatically allocated to membership of one of
the faculties of the College. Faculties undertake a wide range of
activities (including seminars, conferences, workshops, research
and social events) which reflect the College's aim to promote the
highest possible standards of patient care.
The local Faculty is a resource which generates social and
professional contact with peers, and facilitates contact between
GPs and those who work in local primary health care. Many faculties
are seen as local providers of general practice education. In
addition, many produce newsletters designed to keep members
informed on local initiatives and provide a medium for members to
exchange information and ideas. Faculties mirror the organisation
of central Council, the governing body of the College. Each is run
by a Faculty board. At least one representative from each Faculty
sits on the College Council.
