Appraisal, continuing professional development (CPD), and revalidation are important developments of medical practice. For those involved in postgraduate training with GP registrars there is a large commitment to instruction of the registrar and the trainer - as the registrar has educational needs, so does the trainer. A GP Trainers course is compulsory for those GPs teaching registrars for the first time, and each postgraduate deanery has regulations as to when trainers should have a refresher course and to be re-accredited.
This Occasional Paper has the potential to be a national toolkit for appraisal of GP trainers enabling their CPD and hopefully also their revalidation as doctors.
