The relation of children and young people to primary care has become a topic of increased significance in recent years. Young people's health has been highlighted by media headlines on safeguarding and by issues such as teenage pregnancy rates, drug and alcohol misuse in young people, and childhood obesity.
GPs and other primary care practitioners will need to manage these often difficult problems as well as the general health care of children. Written by a team of experts, Care of Children and Young People is the definitive guide to young people in UK primary care. The book contains chapters on:
* care of the newborn u child health promotion
* safeguarding children
* advising parents
* chronic disease in childhood
* mental health problems
* the sexual health of young people
* substance misuse and addiction in adolescence.
This book details the knowledge, skills and competences needed across a range of ages from newborn to young adult. It also looks at illness prevention, first contact with the acutely ill child and the management of long-term conditions or disabilities. Other themes include teamwork, emotional aspects and the transition to adult services.
Care of Children and Young People supports both trainees and GPs undergoing the new assessment process. In addition, established practitioners will find the book invaluable when targeting their learning needs and preparing for revalidation.
