The RCGP's  vision, purpose and priority goals helps to define its work across general practice.


 

 

Object

The Royal College of General Practitioners is a registered charity with the Object:

 

To encourage, foster and maintain the highest possible standards in general medical practice and for that purpose to take or join with others in taking any steps consistent with the charitable nature of that object which may assist towards the same.

 

 

Our Vision

A world where excellent person centred care in general practice is at the heart of healthcare.

 

Our role is to be the voice for General Practice in order to: promote the unique patient - doctor relationship; shape the public’s health agenda; set standards; promote quality and advance the role of general practice globally.

 

 

Our Purpose

To improve the quality of healthcare by ensuring the highest standards for general practice, the promotion of the best health outcomes for patients and the public and by promoting GPs as the heart and the hub of health services.

 

We will do this by:

 

  • ensuring the development of high quality general practitioners in partnership with patients and carers,
  • advancing and promoting the academic discipline and science of general practice,
  • promoting the unique doctor-patient relationship,
  • shaping the public health agenda and addressing health inequalities,
  • being the voice of General Practice

 

 

Our Values

The RCGP is the heart and voice of General Practice and as such:

Priority Goals

The College has defined the following five year priority goals:

 

  • Priority Goal 1. Deliver excellent patient care by supporting General Practitioners and members of the primary health care team through the provision of high quality services and valued member benefits.
  • Priority Goal 2. Continue to develop our role as a leading global organisation for general practice / family medicine through international partnerships and by influencing health policy towards our goals.
  • Priority Goal 3. Provide leadership at all levels in healthcare by supporting the professional development of General Practitioners to maintain standards of excellence and promote patient safety and quality in general practice.
  • Priority Goal 4. Advance General Practice as an academic discipline by helping members to understand the relevance and use of research as part of their core role and by actively supporting academic General Practitioners.
  • Priority Goal 5. Ensure continuous improvement in the calibre of clinical care provided in General Practice by setting quality standards for education, training, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), revalidation and the whole practice environment, and by implementing quality development in initiatives.
  • Priority Goal 6. Ensure the College’s resources and its people are developed to meet the needs of a modern professional organisation, and that we operate in a sustainable manner including the challenges of climate change.
