After the fledgling College was announced on 20 December 1952 a Foundation Council was formed under the Chairmanship of George AbercFirst President's badgerombie, meeting for the first time 18 February 1953. The Foundation Council retired at the first  general meeting of 14 November 1953. The College year traditionally starts in November after the AGM.  The Foundation Council decided that the executive director of the College should be the Chairman of Council, with the President to represent the College at the many social and other functions. At the first AGM of the fully formed College on 14 November 1954 William Pickles was installed as the first President of the College. Both President and Chairman normally hold office for three years.
