Being a Member

The Royal College of General Practitioners has over 34,000 members, of whom around 1,900 are based in the Republic of Ireland or overseas. This makes us one of the largest medical Royal Colleges in the UK.

There are various ways to join the College. You will find details on how to become a member and the benefits of membership in this area of the website.
 
Associates, Members and Fellows who are currently involved with the College are referred to as members “in good standing”. This means that they have met the requirement for their specific category and that they remain paid-up members of the College.

Becoming a Member:
  • Member - Medical practitioners who have successfully completed the College's assessment(s) and applied to be a Member
  • Fellow - Members in good standing who have made a significant contribution to general practice, primary care and/or to upholding the aims and objectives of the College
  • Associate - Fully or provisionally registered medical practitioners who have not passed the College's assessments for membership
  • Associate in Training - Doctors in specialty training for general practice completing the College's assessment
  • Life Membership - Associates, Members or Fellows, who on 1 April of any subscription year have achieved 40 years' of consecutive (continuous) membership are offered Life Membership
  • Re-joining the College - If you have allowed your membership to lapse (for whatever reason) and would like to rejoin, we would be delighted to hear from you
