Promising developments but still more research needed into asthma, says RCGP

Publication date: 05 September 2016

Dr Imran Rafi, Chair of Clinical Innovation and Research at the RCGP, has responded to a new Cochrane Review on the link between vitamin D supplements and reduced rates of severe asthma attacks.

He said: “Asthma is a condition that affects millions of people across the UK and many do report moderate to severe symptoms, so advancements in medical research in the treatment of asthma must be welcomed.

“It is encouraging that this research has so far shown some clinical evidence in reducing rates of severe asthma attacks among adults. However, more work still needs to be done in gathering the evidence, particularly around effectiveness for young people and children – especially as it currently affects as many as one in 11 children.

“It is important to remember that not every drug is suitable for every patient, and if a patient has asthma, they shouldn’t make any changes to their medication without first discussing it with their family doctor. GPs are highly trained to take into account the whole person when making a diagnosis, and will always prescribe in the best interests of the individual patient in front of them.

“It is still too early to make general recommendations on prescribing vitamin D to patients with asthma, but we look forward to seeing the results of further rigorous clinical trials both in adults and children so that we gain a better understanding of this potential method of treatment.”
