Membership fees

This will depend on a number of factors including your subscription fee level and your tax situation. As a guide, members who are UK tax payers can claim up to 40 per cent on their RCGP subscription. 

RCGP members pay annual subscription fees based on a number of criteria including their country of residence, gross income and individual circumstances. Your Membership renewal is due on 1 April each year. New joiners pay their first year’s fees pro-rata, based on the date of joining the College.

How to pay for my membership

Payment by Direct Debit

For members based in the UK and Republic of Ireland, Direct Debit is the easiest and most cost-effective way to pay. There’s a saving of £10 on the full yearly amount if you pay by annual Direct Debit and £5 if you pay your fees in quarterly instalments.

You’ll receive a minimum of two weeks' written notice prior to the first collection in any subscription year. We offer two options for a payment by Direct Debit:

Annual Direct Debit

One lump sum payment due on or immediately after 1 April each year. If you’re setting up a Direct Debit arrangement after 1 April, you’ll be notified of the nearest collection date.

Direct Debit by quarterly instalments

This allows you to spread the cost of your subscription fee over the year. The four instalments are collected on or immediately after the first working day of April, July, October and January. If you’re setting up the Direct Debit arrangement after 1 April, you’ll be notified of the collection dates if they’re not in line with the standard schedule.

In case of hardship, you can contact us to set up Direct Debit payments in more frequent instalments. Please note that this is a discretionary service. Kindly contact the Membership Services team for details.

How to set up a Direct Debit

Over the telephone

If you’re a UK account holder, you may be able to set up your Direct Debit over the phone, provided you are the authorised sole signatory on the account or a joint account holder with sole signatory status for example cheque sign off. Please contact the Membership Services team who will be able to assist you. If you are a Republic of Ireland account holder, kindly complete and return the Direct Debit forms by post as your original signature is required.

Sending a form by post

Alternatively, you can download and complete the Direct Debit mandate forms, quoting your membership number in the reference field. If you do not know your membership number, please write your GMC number in the section provided on the form.

An original signature is required, hence, you need to return the original and signed forms by post. Please note that we cannot accept photocopied, faxed or emailed Direct Debit forms.

Please note, Direct Debit payments cannot be processed for first subscription payments between January and March. If you are joining during this period, your initial payment must be made either by cheque or credit or debit card only. Your completed Direct Debit mandate will be used for subsequent subscription payments.

Payment by card

We accept payments by MasterCard, Visa, Visa Debit and Maestro accounts. Please note that we do not accept American Express and cannot accept card payments from debit cards held outside the UK, due to processing requirements.

Payment by cheque or bank draft

We accept sterling cheques or bank drafts payable in the United Kingdom. They should be made payable to the 'Royal College of General Practitioners' and posted to the Membership Services Department at the contact address below.

Membership renewal falls on 1 April each year, therefore we’ll reduce your annual membership fee if you join or re-join part way through the year. If you opt to pay your fees by Direct Debit, the annual or quarterly Direct Debit discounts (£10, £5) will also be applied pro-rata for the first year.

Your Membership Fee for 2013-2014 is based on your gross income from all professional medical services including any GP work you have done between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013.

The following fees are based on cheque or card payments; Direct Debit discounts are applied automatically when a Direct Debit mandate is enclosed with your membership application form.

Membership renewal fees apply to the following membership categories: Associates, Members, Fellows and International Members

The College's membership year runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. All members are invited to renew in late February or early March, please note non-payment within 4 months of the due date leads to a removal from membership. Direct Debit is the most convenient method ensuring continuity of your membership. The College works hard to keep membership fee increases to a minimum. In the past 5 years, the subscription increases were well below the rate of inflation (1-2%).

Renewal fees for members residing overseas: 2013-2014

Subscription Fee Discounts

There are a number of discounts available. Please check before selecting your rate. If you are a Direct Debit payer, please notify us of your reduced rate as soon as possible, prior to the payment collection date. Please note that your annual RCGP fee is tax deductable.

Hardship

We may offer discounts in cases of hardship. Cases of hardship are considered on an individual basis. Please contact your Membership Services team for details.

Membership of another Royal Medical College

If you’re not working as a GP and are a member of another UK Royal Medical College or Faculty, you can join the RCGP with a ‘secondary affiliation’ status. In this case, you could qualify for a discount of up to 50% on the full RCGP membership fee.

Maternity, Paternity and Adoption leave

If you’re a UK resident and were on Maternity, Paternity or Adoption leave between 2 April 2012 and 1 April 2013, you can claim a 75 per cent discount on our full membership fee. If your leave starts after 2 April 2013, you will be able to claim this rate in the 2014-2015 subscription year.

This reduction is available for one subscription year per child only. If your leave falls across two subscription years, the discount will be applied for the year in which the major part of your leave falls.

If you are not returning to work following your leave, you may be eligible for discounted fees on other grounds, for example, because you’re not currently working or on a reduced income.

Moving overseas

If you live overseas on 1 April of any subscription year, we’ll automatically apply a discount to your membership fee in line with our standard charge for your country of residence, provided we have your main overseas residence address on file.

If you have recently moved overseas, please contact your Membership Services team with your new address. Your overseas rate will be applied on the following 1 April.

Not in active employment

If you are a UK resident and not in employment on 1 April of any subscription year, you can claim a 75 per cent discount on our full membership fee.

Voluntary work

You may qualify for a discount if you’re working for a voluntary organisation. Please contact your Membership Services team for details.

Reduced income and retirement

All UK members are entitled to reduced rates based on income; fees are lower for retired members. Please refer to the above fee tables for income categories.


Claiming tax relief

If you are a UK tax payer you can reduce the cost of your subscription fee through tax relief. In addition, you may also be able to backdate your claim for previous years. You can use your subscription receipt that is automatically emailed to you each year following fee payment for this purpose. Please contact your tax advisor or the HM Revenue and Customs for advice concerning your individual claim and circumstances.
