Practical Information for GPs Treating Diabetes

30th November 2009

The Royal College of General Practitioners has launched a new book as part of the GP curriculum to help doctors treat the 2.6 million patients suffering from diabetes in the UK.

Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders in Primary Care by Professor Roger Gadsby, covers all the main clinical areas in diabetes and endocrinology including obesity; diagnosis of obesity; macrovascular and microvascular complications; glycaemic control and the newer agents; ethnic and psycho-social aspects of care; and structure of care.

The book will be of considerable value to clinicians in secondary as well as primary care.

Dr Vinod Patel, who wrote the Foreword to the book, said: “There is no doubt in my mind that this book will become one of the most used resources for the management of patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders in clinical care.  The real innovation in this particular book is to deal with thyroid and some rarer endocrine disorders, including pituitary disease.  Roger thereby addresses a clinical education need that is rarely tackled.”

The author, Professor Roger Gadsby, said:  “This book was written to give practical information about both the rare and common metabolic problems encountered in general practice with an emphasis on the common problem of diabetes. Case scenarios relate the teaching to real people and situations seen regularly in practice.”

Professor Steve Field, Chair of the RCGP, said: “This is a superb, concise book, ideal for trainees study to pass the MRCGP and also for GPs in practice as an update for their CPD”.

Professor Gadsby is a GP and Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Warwick where he has developed training programmes in diabetes aimed at GPs and practice nurses.

A founder member of the Primary Care Diabetes Society, he is Clinical Lead for the diabetes specialist collection for NHS Evidence (formerly known as the diabetes specialist library for the National Library for Health). Professor Gadsby has been a member of the guideline development groups for four of NICE's clinical diabetes guidelines and for the IDF's global Type 2 diabetes guideline.
